Cable Preacher Curl
- Intermediate
- Isolation
- Rep-based
- Upper arms
The cable preacher curl provides constant tension throughout the entire range of motion, specifically targeting the short head of the biceps to improve peak and thickness. By using a cable instead of free weights, you eliminate the 'dead zone' at the top of the movement where tension usually drops off.

Setup
- Position a preacher bench facing a low cable pulley with an EZ-bar or straight bar attached.
- Sit or stand behind the bench, resting the backs of your upper arms firmly against the slanted pad.
- Grip the bar with an underhand (supinated) grip at shoulder-width.
- Adjust the seat height so your armpits are snug against the top edge of the pad.
How to do it
- Exhale and curl the bar toward your chin by contracting your biceps while keeping your elbows pinned to the pad.
- Squeeze your biceps forcefully at the top of the movement for a one-second peak contraction.
- Inhale as you slowly lower the bar back down over a 2-3 second count.
- Stop just before your elbows reach full extension to maintain constant tension on the muscle.
Form checklist
- Keep your triceps in full contact with the pad at all times.
- Maintain neutral wrists; do not let them flop back or curl excessively forward.
- Keep your torso stationary and avoid using your shoulders to swing the weight up.
- Ensure your feet are planted firmly for a stable base.
Pro tips
- Focus on driving your pinky fingers toward the ceiling at the top of the rep to maximize the peak of the bicep.
- Imagine you are trying to pull the bar through the bench to ensure your elbows stay glued to the pad.
Make it harder
- Add a 3-second pause at the midpoint of the eccentric (lowering) phase to increase mechanical tension.
- Perform a drop set by immediately reducing the weight by 20-30% after reaching technical failure.
