Neck Extensor And Rotational Stretch

  • Beginner
  • Isolation
  • Timed hold
  • Neck
  • Shoulders

This stretch targets the upper trapezius and levator scapulae, helping to alleviate neck tension and improve rotational mobility. By combining flexion with rotation, it effectively elongates the posterior neck muscles that often become tight from prolonged sitting or desk work.

Muscles worked

Primary

  • Trapezius

Secondary

  • Erector spinae

Equipment

  • Body weight

Setup

  1. Sit or stand with a tall, neutral spine and your shoulders pulled down and back.
  2. Place your right hand behind your lower back to anchor the right shoulder down.
  3. Look straight ahead with your chin level to the floor.

How to do it

  1. Rotate your head approximately 45 degrees to the left, so you are looking toward your left armpit.
  2. Gently tuck your chin toward your chest while maintaining the rotation.
  3. Exhale as you use your left hand to apply very light downward pressure on the back of your head to deepen the stretch.
  4. Hold for 20-30 seconds while taking slow, deep breaths, then slowly return to center and switch sides.

Form checklist

  • Keep your shoulders level and avoid shrugging the anchored shoulder toward your ear.
  • Maintain an upright torso; do not allow your upper back to round forward.
  • Apply only minimal pressure with your hand; never force the neck into a painful range.
  • Keep your jaw relaxed and breathe deeply into the belly throughout the hold.

Pro tips

  • Focus on the 'mind-muscle connection' by imagining the space between your ear and your shoulder increasing with every exhale.
  • To specifically target the levator scapulae, focus on pulling the shoulder blade of the side being stretched downward and toward your spine.

Make it harder

  • Sit on the palm of your hand on the side being stretched to further depress the scapula and create a more intense stretch along the side of the neck.
