Setup
- Stand upright on a hard, flat surface with a small towel spread out in front of you.
- Place the front half of your target foot on the edge of the towel while keeping your heel firmly on the floor.
- Maintain a slight bend in the knee and shift most of your weight to the non-working leg for stability.
How to do it
- Use your toes to scrunch the towel toward your heel in small, rhythmic increments.
- Exhale as you curl your toes tightly to pull the fabric, and inhale as you release them to reach for the next section.
- Continue until the entire towel is bunched under your arch, then flatten it out and repeat for the specified repetitions.
Form checklist
- Keep your heel glued to the floor throughout the entire movement.
- Avoid moving your ankle or knee to pull the towel; the movement should come entirely from the toes.
- Maintain an upright torso and avoid leaning over to watch your feet.
- Ensure you are fully extending your toes between each crunch to maximize range of motion.
Pro tips
- Focus on the mind-muscle connection by visualizing your arch lifting as you squeeze your toes.
- Spread your toes as wide as possible before each grab to engage the smaller interosseous muscles.
Make it harder
- Place a small weight, such as a light dumbbell or a book, on the far end of the towel to increase resistance.
- Perform the exercise while balancing on the working leg only to increase the stability demand on the calf.
