Seated Lateral Neck Stretch On A Chair

  • Beginner
  • Isolation
  • Timed hold

This isolation stretch targets the upper trapezius and neck extensors to alleviate tension and improve cervical mobility. It uses the chair as an anchor to create a deeper, more stable stretch through the side of the neck.

Muscles worked

Primary

  • Trapezius

Secondary

  • Deltoids

Equipment

  • Body weight

Setup

  1. Sit upright on a stable chair or bench with your feet flat on the floor and your spine neutral.
  2. Reach down with one hand and firmly grip the edge of the chair seat to anchor that shoulder down.
  3. Place your opposite hand lightly on the top of your head, near the temple of the side being stretched.

How to do it

  1. Exhale slowly as you gently tilt your ear toward the opposite shoulder, keeping your face looking forward.
  2. Use the weight of your hand to provide a very light, controlled assist without pulling forcefully.
  3. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds while maintaining deep, diaphragmatic breathing.
  4. Inhale as you slowly return your head to the center before switching sides.

Form checklist

  • Keep both shoulders depressed and away from your ears throughout the movement.
  • Maintain a tall, upright posture and avoid leaning your torso to the side.
  • Keep your chin tucked slightly to prevent the neck from jutting forward.
  • Ensure your nose remains pointed forward rather than rotating toward the floor or ceiling.

Pro tips

  • Actively pull the anchored shoulder down toward the floor to maximize the distance between the ear and the shoulder.
  • Focus on the 'mind-muscle' release by visualizing the trapezius fibers lengthening with every exhale.

Make it harder

  • Slightly rotate your chin toward your armpit while in the lateral tilt to target the levator scapulae.
  • Increase the duration of the hold to 60 seconds to allow for deeper myofascial release.
