Setup
- Stand upright with your feet hip-width apart and a neutral spine.
- Let your arms hang at your sides with palms facing your body.
- Engage your core and slightly tuck your chin to maintain a neutral neck.
How to do it
- Raise both arms out to the sides simultaneously until they are parallel with the floor.
- Exhale during the upward phase and maintain a slight, soft bend in the elbows.
- Inhale as you slowly lower your arms back to your sides over a 3-second count.
Form checklist
- Avoid shrugging your shoulders toward your ears during the lift.
- Keep your torso completely still; do not use momentum to swing the arms.
- Ensure your palms face the floor at the top of the movement.
- Stop the movement at shoulder height to avoid unnecessary joint stress.
Pro tips
- Create 'internal resistance' by tensing your shoulder muscles as if you are pushing through heavy water.
- Perform the movement in the 'scapular plane' by bringing your arms slightly forward (about 30 degrees) to better engage the deltoids and pectorals safely.
Make it harder
- Add a 5-second isometric hold at the top of each repetition to increase time under tension.
- Perform the exercise while standing on one leg to challenge your core stability and balance.
